Next-generation flexibility market software

Scale your flexibility procurement

ElectronConnect – the flexibility market platform – configures to your flexibility needs, helping you launch and coordinate multiple
markets, at scale

How it works

Watch Nick Huntbatch, Chief Product Officer, deep dive into what ElectronConnect is and how you can use it to deliver flexibility at scale.

Multiple markets across multiple time frames and products, supported with a full ecosystem of extra services such as baselining and performance insights. This is how the flexibility market platform ties it all together.

Your flexibility needs, at scale and pace

Choose markets to match your needs

Whether you’re buying flexibility or providing grid services, use a flexibility marketplace that suits your needs. Let’s accelerate the transition to Net Zero energy together.

Demand response

Demand response markets help ensure grid stability and reliability through load shifting and shaping services provided by Industrial and Commercial (I&C) or residential end-consumers. Demand response is typically procured ahead of time by the system operator from multiple resources.

ElectronConnect offers various demand response market configurations to cater for demand response actions. This includes integrations with third parties, such as meter data platforms and consumer-facing apps to communicate upcoming demand response events.

Local constraints

Local constraint markets provide a pre-fault reinforcement deferral to system and network operators, and support for network restoration post-fault.

ElectronConnect offers a wide range of local constraint market configurations. This includes long-term contracts and ahead scheduling for pre-fault markets, as well as near real-time resource dispatching for post-fault markets. You can also include optional coordination between national and local system operators, to suit your requirements.

Local curtailment

Local curtailment markets enable dynamic, near real-time trading of curtailment between Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) – both generation and demand – allowing DERs subject to curtailment to optimise their positions in curtailment queues.

ElectronConnect facilitates trading between many DERs simultaneously and supports several different many-to-many matching algorithms. The trading is directly informed by real-time network management signals that are integrated with the platform.

Community energy

Community energy markets allow bi-lateral local community energy trading, enabling communities to use renewable energy produced locally.

ElectronConnect supports different community energy trading arrangements, such as where local solar or battery prosumers can sell their excess energy to local consumers. The service includes management of community demand and generation profiles, signal sending to community DERs, and energy accounting and settlement after delivery.

End-to-end flexibility trading: everything in one place

ElectronConnect’s flexibility market software provides an end-to-end flexibility trading journey.

From resource onboarding to settlement, the flexibility market platform connects system and network operators with distributed energy resources (DERs) to help you manage the use and generation of electricity at the right time, in the right place – and for the right price.

Onboard DERs and qualify for markets

The market platform onboards DERs and qualifies them for markets based on the configurable qualification criteria defined by market operators (resource location, part of the network, technology type, response times etc).

Match and clear trades for configured markets

The flexibility market software matches and clears trades, and enables rules-based multi-market coordination. Customers can choose from pre-defined market templates or configure their own market. The technology supports a variety of trading protocols, one-to-many and many-to-many trading arrangements. It also supports different payment structures (availability and utilisation, utilisation-only) and clearing methods (pay-as-clear, pay-as-bid).

ElectronConnect can integrate with network management systems and power flow analysis tools to automate flexibility procurement, veto resources using the signals from the network management systems, analyse network impact, and more.

Dispatch ahead of time or in real-time

ElectronConnect schedules DERs to dispatch ahead of time or sends dispatch instructions in real-time.

Frequently asked questions

ElectronConnect currently hosts live markets in the north-west and central-southern regions of England, and the Highlands of Scotland.

The markets cover 50 network zones, run between two distribution network operators: Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks and Electricity North West Limited.

ElectronConnect is used by the UK’s leading flexibility service providers, having registered over 100 MW of capacity across hundreds of assets (approximate figures correct as of 28 August 2024).

ElectronConnect allows the configuration of multiple markets and trading arrangements.

We currently run all five of the standardised flexibility products in the UK and can configure additional arrangements – as with our BiTraDER innovation project, for example.

There is no limit to how many different markets you can run at the same time on the market platform.

Yes. ElectronConnect has been built to sit alongside existing systems. The platform is therefore configurable, extensible – and easy to use. It is based on proven, scalable underlying technologies – inclusive by design – and supports market operator and provider interactions through UI, flat-file uploads or programmatically via API.

  • For network utilities and system operators: We can integrate with your existing network systems, such as Active Network Management or DERMs. This allows market-based flexibility procurement to be informed by network needs directly.
  • For flexibility service providers: We can integrate with aggregator and optimiser platforms, allowing those organisations to indicate flexible capacity and availability programatically.

System operators and flexibility service providers logged into ElectronConnect can see performance insights for past flexibility procurement rounds as well as information about all the opportunities available, all in one place.
