USE CASE

SP Electricity North West

Becoming the most digital DSO

The partnership between SP Electricity North West and Electron offers distributed energy resource (DER) operators acting as flexibility service providers (FSPs) a fully end-to-end, online journey to help drive engagement and participation with the network operator’s flexibility markets.

SP ENW operates one of the most diverse electricity networks, from the rural hills of the lake district to Manchester, one of the largest cities in the UK.

When it comes to incentivising flexibility, the network operator needs to cater for a broad range of DER technology types, locations, and timeframes to maximise the volume of flexible capacity it procures.

Previous systems made this difficult – for the DSO and its FSPs – with a reliance on spreadsheets and off-system processes and no integration with operational systems.

SP ENW partnered with Electron in March 2024 to deliver flexibility markets run on the next-generation market platform, ElectronConnect.

SP ENW uses the platform for the full, end-to-end journey, from commercial contracting, through to long-term auctions and operational dispatch and settlement.

The close integration between ElectronConnect and SP ENW’s dispatch and order management systems aligns with SP ENW’s aim to become the most digital DSO.

The platform enables SP ENW to procure flexibility across multiple technology types, network levels, and time scales, from day-ahead to year(s)-ahead.

That integration brings markets closer to system needs – whilst reducing the manual effort of operating and running the markets.

“Electricity North West is committed to remaining at the forefront of innovation in distribution system operation. This partnership with Electron underscores our dedication to using flexibility to deliver tangible benefits to our customers. We look forward to collaborating with Electron to further drive the digitalisation and development of our network, opening up these opportunities for flexibility to all of our customers, and working together to create a sustainable and equitable energy future for all, together.”
