tem market opportunities

Participate in tem’s new day-ahead markets – no matter where your battery energy storage assets are connected across Great Britain – and earn for MWs reserved with bonuses for MWs dispatched.

How it works

1. Register your organisation and assets on the ElectronConnect platform.

2. Each day, you’ll receive a notification confirming whether your assets are reserved or released for other services.

3. When flexibility is required, you’ll receive a dispatch instruction via API specifying timing and MWs, subject to tem’s service terms.

4. Deliver your response. The platform records your performance and supports settlement with Elexon.

5. Receive payments automatically for both reservation and utilisation.

Why this market exists

When renewables surge or drop unexpectedly, suppliers face costly imbalance prices.

tem’s new markets help change that volatility into value. By reserving flexible capacity on a day-ahead basis, tem ensures supply and demand stay aligned – and pays flexibility providers for being part of that insurance layer.

You earn availability revenue for being ready, and receive utilisation payments when your assets are activated. The result is a simpler, nationwide way for flexible assets to earn more, while helping renewables deliver grid reliability.

FAQs

Answering your questions about participation

This market is built to make participation simple and predictable. Here are some of your top questions answered.

Grid-connected battery energy storage systems (BESS) can participate. The market is designed for battery operators seeking stable, predictable income alongside other flexibility revenues.

You’ll receive a day-ahead notification to confirm if you will be retained or released.

You will need to make capacity available for up to 100 reserved hours per MW per year, subject to tem’s nominations. Actual activation is capped at 30 MWh per year.

Yes. Capacity is released on a day-ahead basis, so when you’re not reserved, you’re free to participate in other markets.

“By integrating real physical flexibility through our partnership with Electron, we’re extending that infrastructure to manage the growing imbalance between supply and demand across every half hour of the day, driven by the rapid expansion of variable renewables.”
