Brussels, 27th April 2024 – Electron, the leader in distributed energy markets, has joined smartEn Smart Energy Europe with the joint mission to accelerate the clean energy transition by enabling more flexible, resilient grids.
Electron’s vision is to unleash renewable energy abundance by connecting millions of distributed energy resources to thousands of coordinated markets. Since launching in 2016, Electron’s mission has been to help network utilities and municipal suppliers adopt and scale flexibility markets to manage grid congestion, improve connection rates, and lower bills.
smartEn is a European business association integrating consumer-driven solutions for the clean energy transition. smartEn creates opportunities for organisations to support an increasingly renewable energy system, which has attracted Electron to join forces and work together with other smartEn members to accelerate the drive to net zero.
Electron’s award-winning Software as a Service platform, ElectronConnect, brings network utilities, asset owners & aggregators, suppliers, and consumers together to launch, operate and participate in multiple, co-ordinated local energy markets. By working with smartEn, Electron can partner with other member organisations across Europe to deploy flexibility markets at scale – making more efficient use of the existing grid and allowing more clean technologies to connect to the grid faster.
Chris Broadhurst, Electron’s Chief Commercial Officer, commented: “Today, limitations with our existing grid mean low cost, clean energy from renewable generation is being wasted, whilst new projects are stuck in connection queues of up to 10 years. Localised energy markets are the key to a more flexible grid, so we’re delighted to be joining up with smartEn and its fellow members to help drive the flexibility agenda forward”.
smartEn’s Executive Director, Michael Villa, said: “We are delighted to welcome Electron to the smartEn community and we look forward to working together towards our shared vision of a digital, decentralised and more resilient energy sector with consumers at the forefront.”
